"Queen" means three different things depending on which country the listing was written in. If you are about to buy a duvet cover, read this first — it is the single most common reason bedding gets returned.
What size duvet cover do I need?
Match the cover to your duvet insert, not to your mattress. A cover should be the same size as the insert or up to about 5 cm larger on each side. Much bigger and the insert slides around inside; smaller and it compresses the filling and looks strained. Measure the insert flat with a tape before you order — two minutes of measuring saves a return that takes three weeks each way.

These are the common market standards. Individual brands vary by a few centimetres, which is exactly why measuring beats trusting a label.

The traps that cause most returns
- A US Queen is not an Australian Queen. 229 × 229 cm versus 210 × 210 cm — nearly 20 cm of difference in both directions.
- A UK King is smaller than an Australian King. Buying from an international site without converting is how people end up with a cover that will not close.
- "Duvet set" rarely includes the duvet. It usually means cover plus pillowcases only.
- Old or European inserts are frequently non-standard. If yours came with the house, measure it. Do not assume.
- Two singles on one bed. If you use the Scandinavian two-duvet method, you need two single covers, not one large one.
How to measure your insert in 60 seconds
- Lay the duvet flat on the bed or floor, smoothed out but not stretched.
- Measure the width from seam to seam at the middle, not at the corners.
- Measure the length the same way.
- Write it down as width × length in centimetres — that is your cover size.
- If it falls between two standard sizes, order the custom size. With us it costs the same.
What about pillowcases and fitted sheets?
Pillowcase sizes differ by country too, and fitted sheets depend on mattress depth rather than just bed size — a 40 cm pillow-top mattress will defeat a standard fitted sheet regardless of whether the length and width are right. Common questions
Should the duvet cover be bigger than the duvet? Slightly, or exactly the same. Up to 5 cm larger per side is fine; more than that and the insert shifts.
What if my duvet is an odd size? Order a custom size. Every piece we make is cut to order, so a non-standard cover costs the same as the nearest standard one and takes the same 3–4 weeks.
Can I use a US Queen cover on an Australian Queen duvet? It will fit loosely and bunch. Physically possible, visually disappointing.
Do linen duvet covers shrink? Ours are pre-washed before shipping, so movement after that is minimal — a small amount is inherent to natural linen.
Buttons or zip? We use natural coconut buttons: easy to replace individually, and they let a little more air move than a full-length zip.

What if your duvet is not a standard size at all?
Then stop shopping by chart and order to the measurement. This is the part most size guides leave out: every size above is a convention, not a rule, and a large share of duvets in circulation — old European inserts, hotel stock, anything that came with a house, anything made before about 1990 — sit between two of them. We cut every cover to order in our Hanoi workshop, so an unusual number costs exactly the same as the nearest standard one. No surcharge, no minimum order, no extra waiting time.
Three cases where custom is the only sensible answer
- Your insert is between sizes. Ordering the larger standard size means the insert slides; the smaller means it strains. Neither is fixable later.
- You use two single duvets on one bed. The Scandinavian method needs two covers cut to the singles you actually own, which are rarely both the same brand.
- Your bed is wider than 240 cm. Most bedding fabric is woven narrower than that, so covers get a centre seam. Ours is woven 250–280 cm wide, so most oversized covers come out seamless.
What to send us: the insert's width × length in centimetres, measured flat down the middle. That is all. If you are unsure, photograph the tape on the duvet and we will check the numbers before anything is cut.
